The worst argument against Bert's candidacy has to do with the fact that he won 20 only once, and that he finished in the top-5 in Cy voting only three times, never winning.

The best argument is that his career ERA is 3.31 during an era when the average pitcher had a 3.90. Bert's ERA is very good. But it's borderline in comparison with the rest of the league.

I for one think that he belongs. His adjusted ERA is 118 and when you combine that with 3700 strikeouts, I think he has a very strong case in proving that he was among the very best of his time.

Sure, Coley. I don't believe that guys like Travis Jackson, George Kell, Tony Lazzeri, Orlando Cepeda, Tony Perez, Freddy Lindstrom, Roger Connor, Rick Ferrell, Hal Newhouser, and Jim Bunning deserve to be in the Hall of Fame, espeicially ahead of guys like Santo, Wills, and Hodges.

I also think the Vets Committee under its previous incarnation elected a few too many Negro Leaguers toward the end. That's probably not PC to say, but they way it was set up, the were allowed to elect one regular player and one Negro Leaguer per year and they always elected one from each without fail.

Nick, can you give some examples of guys who the veteran's committee voted into the Hall of Fame who didn't deserve it? I'm curious.
