It's probably admirable, but not necessarily effective. I don't think he's terrible defensively, but he's certainly not good. His fielding % is below average for a 2B and by any statistical measure of range, he is sub par. Throw in a .289 OBP and .684 OPS and your team is better off without you in the lineup. This has nothing to do with his character, and has nothing to do with what he has accomplished in his career. He's a top-10 second baseman of all time. But he's not anymore. Biggio is getting up there it's true, but nothing can be said about how his abilities are lacking, because there's nothing to be said. Biggio is among the ranks of some of the greatest men to have ever played the game. period. Sub-par? His defense is sub-par? How do you figure?
