The statement here is that Burrell has been the best ‘player’ in the second-half. He has been among the best at the plate, but the guy is one of the worst defensive players in baseball. He belongs in the AL as a DH. Plus, he’s one of the slowest players in baseball as well, as he is pinch-run for every time he gets on base in the 7th inning or later. Guys like Alex Rodriguez, Carlos Beltra, and David Wright have similar numbers at the plate in the last two months, and get it done in the field and on the basepaths.

Also, I would say his stock was at an all-time high the day he was drafted with the #1 overall pick in the draft.

I’m a Phillies. I like having Burrell in the line-up. But he’ll never be the best player in the league, even for half a season.

Update: Cafardo wrote the following, now, about his comments above: “Lots of Phillies fans didn’t like my Pat Burrell-J.D. Drew proposed swap last week. Boston fans did.”

Except for this Boston fan, who lives in the real world.

But then he goes off the deep end again, suggesting Dave Littlefield (among others) to become Astros GM. Littlefield should never even be *interviewed* for a GM job again. You would do better to suggest BILL Littlefield!

Hold up there, Joe. Sox fans didn’t want Drew in the first place. If you don’t believe me, check Lexis Nexis. Don’t take your anger out on us—direct it where we direct ours, squarely at Theo and Larry.

Bostonians were pessimistically skeptical, at best, about both Drew and Lugo. But Theo’s man-crushes could not be denied. And Larry’s slavish devotion to Scott Boras clients could not go unanswered. So here they are: totally overpaid, totally sucking. The Fenway Faithful, in turn, get to bitch about it. That is our bitter, hard-earned reward for having our grim predictions come true.

In this column, Nick Cafardo is just smoking something; his article doesn’t mention any major league sources or anyone in the Sox FO talking about moving Drew for Burrell. It’s just a twisted phantasm of his fevered brain! This deal is so not going to happen. This deal is so not going to even be talked about beyond this one note in yesterday’s fishwrap and these few pixels here on UmpBump. I’m telling you, the Boston Globe better start poaching Boston Metro writers.

If he hasn’t been the best player in baseball in the second half, he is pretty darn close, and you can bet his stock hasn’t been high in over five years.

Sarah — it’s hard to sympathize with the fan base of the second highest pay-rolled team bitching about a player they knowingly overpaid for. JD Drew at that. The Yankees comparison was certainly low, but I think there is a degree of spoiled whining here.

Now if the Sox want Burrell, fine (but let’s not talk about *his* defensive liabilities), I don’t think many in Philly would cry to see him go. However, Coley is on the mark about Drew. Send us pitching instead and find another place to dump your expensive mistake.

Oh, speaking of defense, to go back to Coley’s post, there’s no way Pat the Bat could handle Fenway’s dastardly right field. No way. Normally Cafardo delivers quality work…I don’t know what got into him on this one. Slow day at the office, I guess.

I agree with almost everything you say here, but saying that Burrell’s stock is at an ‘all-time high’ or that he’s been ‘the best player in baseball’ in the second-half are definite exaggerations. He still pretty much sucks, and everybody knows that, except maybe the Mets. Having said that, I wouldn’t trade him for J.D. Drew in a million years.

Ugh, it’s even worse than I thought. Despite my gut feeling that Drew had been doing well defensively, he’s actually in the bottom half of all major defensive stats! His range factor? Dead last! Now I’m really depressed.

I am just going to ignore that jibe about the “new Yankees,” Joe. Not even going to dignify it.

LOL! I can already hear to boos in Fenway when Burrell falls into one of his annual slumps. Called strike three down the middle… BOOOO.. A flailing swing known better known as ‘The Proposal’ at an outside slider for strike three… BOOOO…

You guys are the new Yankees, so why not go out and buy another, better right fielder?
