Bill Buckner was the surprise mystery guest who threw out the first pitch yesterday at Fenway’s Home Opener. As I’ve previously admitted, I greeted the late-breaking announcement with cynicism. Can’t we just get on with the pennants and the rings and the parades and leave all that crap behind us?

The baseball uniform is something of a curiosity. I think we can all agree that baseball did the world a favor by bringing us the baseball cap. But in what other sport are players required to wear a thick belt, tapered white stretch pants, a glorified pajama top, and stirrups?!

Here’s an exciting addition to your list, Ward, via Joy of Sox: those lame-ass Coke bottles atop Fenway’s left field wall are history.
Apparently, some people are feeling nostalgic for them already. Since they were only put up a few years ago, however, that makes about as much sense as getting worked up over that old hideous Hood bottle in right.

Dodgers’ special adviser Jackie Chan has already proved a valuable resource for the team’s core of emerging talent. “Coach Jackie is so great to have around,” said Andre Ethier, as youngsters Matt Kemp and James Loney nodded in agreement. “Having him and Joe Torre here has really helped.”
“The only thing I don’t really understand,” added Kemp, “Is why Coach Chan always calls me ‘grasshopper.’”
