It's not that I'm not a Reyes fan, but he is overrated by the general populace. But this is true for all guys known for speed, I think. As far as offense is concerned, I think we place far too much emphasis on speed. It doesn't nearly have as much value as power or the ability to draw a walk.

I still think that Reyes' future is as a perennial All Star. He's just not there yet and shouldn't be expected to perform at that level.

Good post, Paul. I was actually never a big fan of Jose Reyes, even back when everyone was raving about him. He just never seemed to me to have the underlying skill set which would be required to sustain true greatness. I mean, everyone likes stolen bases, and Reyes does seem to be a decent defender at short, but if you can't draw walks and you don't have power, you really aren't going to be a great hitter over the long haul.

Good, insightful article.

I too have certainly not given up on my Mets. Whatever woes they have faced up to now will, I'm sure, right themselves come September.

I like the way you've deconstructed what's going on with the organisation.

Willie needs to stay for sure.

I wish we still had Lastings Milledge
