What's that sound?? It's the door of the NL Central closing shut as the Cubbies acquired Rich Harden. (Note: I hear the door is held together with the same stuff that keeps Harden's brilliant brittle arm in one piece.) I like the deal from the Cubs' end. They made a big move to counter Milwaukee and didn't give up a whole hell of a lot. Murton and Patterson are MLB-ready players who weren't going to see any real action for the Cubs and Gallagher is a good prospect but not a great one. For the Cubs (without much of a current farm system to speak of) to go out and get Rich Harden, he of the 3-0 record and 0.68 ERA against the NL this year, I say, "Hat's off to Jim Hendry. Well played, sir."

Sabathia certainly increases the Brewers chance of making the playoffs but I don't think he makes them better than the Cubs. While I would much rather he had ended up on the North Side he doesn't bolster Milwaukee's weak bullpen and he won't keep Sheets off the disabled list. I think he makes the Brewers a contender for the NL wild card and I still expect the Cubs to make a move for a #2 or 3 starter. As both teams stand right now the Cubs are still the better team. Also has there ever been a team in the history of baseball that had a pair of players that out-weighed Sabathia and Fielder? Fattest teammates ever.

No, Paul. Jim's logic is unassailable. From now on, UmpBump will only cover the 29 baseball teams about which objective observers are scientifically proven to give a crap. We will redact the name "Red Sox" from all our previous coverage (eg, so that last year's World Series coverage will read, "[REDACTED] wins!"). Also, the Boston Metro has asked that I stop covering the Red Sox, as a new focus group study has uncovered that 96% of their readership only care about the Royals, Padres, and Orioles.

Um, Jim? She's a Sox fan. What's wrong with a fan talking about their team?

Yep, Al! Thanks to JetBlue's in-seat personal televisions, I was able to spend my flight watching Red Sox-Yankees and also heard the news about the trade being finalized.

Did you see Mariano Rivera strikeout Manny Ramirez on three pitches, with Manny taking all the way? It was a truly jaw-dropping moment. I think it took me a full minute to close my mouth.

Hey, at least the Cubs also got seven All-Star elections!

Jim, I've talked to so many people who think you suck at your job, too. It's unfortunate, but you just can't please everyone all the time.

I was considering doing a post on the All-Star balloting. Maybe an actual Metro column, even. Suffice it to say for the present that it's my understanding that *all* the fans vote for the All Stars, not just Boston Red Sox fans, and that reserves, of which Varitek is one, were in fact elected by the players. Admittedly, as you point out, my understanding of baseball is extremely limited.

I can't believe your still writing for this site. I've talked to so many people that think your Boston blinders has made you unreadable. How about an article on how Varitek just plain stinks and coulnd't make my beer league all-star game. How about joke man Youkilis, ya he's way better than Morneau. I'll bet any of you Boston clowns he's out of baseball in three years. Your all-star voting is an embarrassment and shows your lack of baseball knowledge.
