Paul,
I don't believe the situation in St. Louis is the same as every other franchise. It's not like they are Kansas City. Not only do they have a new stadium but it is full every game unlike most.
I am simply echoing a sentiment expressed by not only their fans but their Manager. He was complaining last year that they needed to go get more pitching. I don't doubt that teams will use the current economy as an excuse but there are teams that have the money and will spend it unlike the Cardinals. Personally, I'm hoping they don't add a top of the rotation starter, I like seeing them 4th in the division.

Melissa, the same could be said about pretty much all of baseball. Payrolls don't match increase in revenue. It's pocketed and there's no point in complaining about it. Besides, with the global economy in the current shape, owners have a new reason to not spend.

For an outfield platoon partner, they would do well to consider Rocco Baldelli. He's much better against lefties, should come fairly cheaply, and can't play everyday with his mitochondrial condition, so he's looking to land somewhere in a platoon anyhow.

It's a very big "if" for Carpenter to be healthy. They have struggled to come up with pitching the past two seasons and they have the revenue to justify acquiring a top of the rotation pitcher. The increase in their payroll the past two seasons is not equal to their increase in revenue. They've not gone all out to fill needs by spending money and they don't currently have a minor league system to fulfill their needs from within. They should let Ankiel walk, he has also been an injury waiting to happen.

Melissa, Coley and I were talking about this. I do think that they should have about $8-10MM to spend this off-season. But Ankiel, Ludwick, and Wellemeyer are arbitration-eligible this year and they're going to get big raises.

Plus, the Cardinals already increased they payroll by $11M over the last two years since their new stadium opened. I have no inside knowledge on what DeWitt is going to do and saying anything beyond that is pure fabrication on my part.

And I agree with you that they SHOULD go spend some cash. But what happens IF Carpenter proves healthy? Who gets bumped? Logic says Pineiro. His contract says he's not going anywhere. So they'd have to deal one of Lohse, Wellemeyer or Wainwright. I don't think that the extra money spent will be that much of an improvement over those guys.

So if they can spend, I think Rafael Furcal is a good choice. Or if they can dig within their system to trade prospects for Brian Roberts, even better.

The Cards moved into their new stadium and increased their revenue in 06. They have not increased their payroll to the same degree. LaRussa has let it be known he wants them to go out and spend on better players. They are not a small market team and they have a good revenue stream. They should go out and spend the money for a top of the rotation starter.

If mid-season the Cards are out of it (which I don't think they will be), I'd guess that they would be open to dealing Ankiel since he'd be approaching free agency. In which case, Rasmus takes over if all goes to plan.

My keeper league fantasy team needs Rasmus to get to the big leagues and rake this season.
