The Red Sox got a lot of ink this offseason for a couple of marquee acquisitions. They traded for Adrian Gonzalez and signed Carl Crawford. These were universally acclaimed moves. Expensive, but acclaimed. And hey, if you’ve got the money you might as well spend it, right?

Last year’s Red Sox team finished the season with 88 wins and will probably need to crack 94 or 95 if they’re going to reach the playoffs this season. Crawford and Gonzalez should get them part of the way, but losing Beltre (who had an outstanding season in 2010) and V-Mart hurt. Ultimately, the Red Sox will rise or fall on the strength of their pitching. Lackey, Beckett and Dice-K all come with big question marks. At least two of those guys will have to improve on his performance from 2010 if the Sox are going to play October baseball.

I’d be happy with one win at this point

  2. you forgot Bobby Jenks, Alfredo Aceves and Matt Albers under Acquisitions, Jenks being the biggest. Also, Salty was acquired last fall, not during the offseason.
