Phils sign Moyer

The Phillies have signed Jamie Moyer to a two-year, $10.5 million contract with bonuses. That’s a lot of money for a 43 year-old. But Moyer was solid down the stretch this season, and he’s a good role model for young starter Cole Hamels. From the Philadelphia Inquirer:

The Phillies and Moyer held a $4.75 million mutual option for next season, but Moyer had family considerations with his wife and children living in Seattle. The Phillies and Moyer renegotiated the contract and extended him through 2008 to alleviate those concerns.

Now that the Phillies have Moyer signed, their starting staff for next season looks like this: Moyer, Hamels, Brett Myers, Randy Wolf and John Lieber. Not bad, but…I dunno…Moyer is going to be 45 when this contract expires. 45!

UPDATE: It seems that a big chunk of the money that Moyer is scheduled to earn in the second season of his deal is tied to performance. That’s reassuring.

Oh…one last thing: Is it me, or is Jamie Moyer not the modern day equivalent of Eddie Harris from the movie Major League? Minus the southern accent, of course.
