Pravda wants you to know more about US corruption, Albert Pujols’s elbow

Does anyone else find it amusing that Russian news source Pravda (”The Truth”), which was once edited by Josef Stalin, and for nearly a century was the official mouthpiece of the Central Committee of the Russian Communist Party, is now running the article, “Albert Pujols puts off surgery on right elbow“?

Ah, globalization!

I mean, it’s not as if the character of the rest of the newspaper has changed, since at the same time they are also running numerous stories heavily critical of the US, with titles such as:

USA exercises double standards again

US marketing: bribes and blackmail

Americans no longer able to support world’s biggest economy

But it’s nice to know that the online heir to Josef Stalin’s legacy is at least coming around to the fact that baseball is awesome, even if it still doesn’t like US-style capitalism.

    Nick, I find it amusing.

And I find it amusing that even something with as dour a history as Pravda has to resort to tabloid-style journalism in order to sell papers.

    To wit:

    Orgasms may work unimaginable miracles

Boriska, boy from Mars, says that all humans live eternally

Modern science still turns a blind eye on levitation

Whoah, whoah whoah! Nick, I finally got around to reading that Pravda article on Pujols. First, I think it may have been translated by a robot (the surgery could “kick him out for the upcoming season”). But also, Pravda is full of SABR geeks!

“He won (as did fellow Cardinal, catcher Yadier Molina) the prestigious Fielding Bible Award for his defensive excellence at first base, which is given to only one player per position in the major leagues.”

No mention of his 2006 Gold Glove! Just the FBA! Pravda, boldly venturing where the New York Times fears to tread!

  3. Nick Kapur Says:

    Yeah, I know!

It’s not just an AP article or something. This article was clearly produced by actual, card-carrying Russian Communists!

In addition to the points you mentioned, I also enjoy the caption:

“Albert Pujols adjourns surgery on right elbow.”
