The 2nd Annual Douchie Awards – Now Even Fresher

The economy is in the tank. India and Pakistan have beef. Some “suspicious powders” are appearing in US Embassies – and neither Bobby Brown nor the 1986 Mets are involved. Let’s face it. 2008 kind of sucked.

But fear not. We can soon turn the calendar. And on the upside, terrible years beget great douches. Or is it the other way around?

Anyhow,  it’s the 2008 edition of The Douchies – where we pay tribute to all the douchebags in the world of baseball.

Here we have our list of nominees for these most prestigious awards in the field of douchebaggery. But we need you to tell us who is most deserving of these honors. So let the voting commence!

And The Winners Are…

award.JPGFor those of you who missed it (where the hell were you?), last week, we here at UmpBump nominated 27 deserving men to be the first ever recipients of The Douchies, an award that finally recognizes the douchiness of certain individuals employed by Major League Baseball. Close to 500 of you cast a total of 1746 votes in our four categories and I have to say, some of the results were surprising.

So here they are! Your winners of the 1st Annual Douchie Awards!

The Reggie Jackson Award for Best Display of Attention Grabbing is named after a man who has attained mythical stature as an attention-whore during his playing career. He was the forebearer to the modern, preening baseball player, putting the size of the contract ahead of most anything else. This award will be presented to the person who best personified Mr. Jackson’s penchant to run after the spotlight no matter what cost.

What overrated smells like

Derek Jeter is launching his own brand of cologne. It’s called “Driven.” From FoxSports.com:

The fragrance, the first in a line of men’s grooming products bearing Jeter’s name, goes on sale in November.

“I have been very involved with creating this fragrance — everything from the blend of scents to the design of the bottle and logo,” Jeter said in the news release. “I did have some help, however. Because women buy a large percentage of the men’s grooming products sold in the U.S., I asked my mother Dot and sister Sharlee to be part of the project.

“I wanted to make sure the final product was something men would like to wear — and that women would want them to wear.”

The fragrance is a blend of chilled grapefruit, clean oak moss and spice.

The promotional poster for “Driven” uses the tagline, “Life without limits.” An interesting choice of words, considering Jeter’s historically limited range.
