A’s still dominate the dog days
Not that anyone noticed, because for once it doesn’t actually matter this year, but I feel compelled to point out that once again the A’s tore it up in August this season, posting a 17-12 record.
Granted, that is not nearly as impressive an August record as the A’s have compiled in some recent seasons, but given that the A’s are a pretty sucky team this year, who have posted an abominable 53-63 record in all months not named “August,” 17-12 is pretty awesome.
Just to put things in perspective, if the A’s were to play at that pace all season long, they would go 95-67, which would make them a lock for the playoffs.
So clearly, there is still something magical about the Oakland Athletics and the month of August.
The A’s August record for the past seven seasons:
2007 – 17-12
2006 – 21-6
2005 – 17-11
2004 – 20-8
2003 – 20-9
2002 – 24-4
2001 – 22-7
Total – 141-57 (.712)

A’s up to old August Tricks
Don’t look now, but the Oakland Athletics are up to their old tricks.
Perhaps a bit lost in the lights of the Dodgers winning 17 out of 18 games, the A’s have quietly gone 12-2 in August, and 15-2 if you go back three games into July.
Over the past six seasons, the A’s have a ridiculous record in August of 115-41. Here’s how it breaks down season by season:
2006 – 12-2
2005 – 17-11
2004 – 20-8
2003 – 20-9
2002 – 24-4
2001 – 22-7
A’s GM Billy Beane is fond of saying that the first two months of the season are for figuring out what you need, the second two months are for getting what you need, and the last two months are for having what you need and making a run at the playoffs.
Looks like the A’s have what they need. Once again.
