It’s good to be a Schuerholz

That’s right, it’s good to be a Schuerholz.

If you’re Braves GM Jon Schuerholz, your team is on top of the NL East, Chipper Jones is healthy, Tim Hudson is dominant again, and Bobby Cox is about to set a record for most career ejections.

If you’re Braves minor league prospect Jonathan Schuerholz, son of the GM, things are good because you just got promoted from AA to AAA because…um…well…because you’re Jonathan Schuerholz, that’s why!

Another note, Jonathan Schuerholz, son of Braves general manager John Schuerholz, got called up to Richmond from Mississippi to replace Willie Harris on the roster. Schuerholz, an infielder, was hitting .182 (4-for-22) in 12 games in Mississippi.

Now I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking that .182 isn’t very good and that this is a clear case of nepotism. But I don’t believe in nepotism. To quote Ferris Bueller, “I don’t believe in isms. Isms, in my opinion, are not good.” In other words, there must be some other reason for Schuerholz’s promotion.

Maybe his low average isn’t a concern because he’s more of a power guy? Well, he only had four hits this year and they were all singles. So that’s not it.

Maybe he’s fast? Well, he didn’t steal any bases at AA.

Maybe he got called up because they simply needed a 2B at AAA? No, he got called up to replace outfielder Willie Harris, who is an outfielder.

Maybe he’s just off to a slow start? Nope. Not that either. Last year, in 116 games in the international league, he hit .184 with 2 HR and 25 RBI. His on-base percentage was .252 and he struck out 94 times, while walking only 32 tims. Actually, this is Schuerholz’s second chance with Richmond. Last year, after a late-season promotion to the Triple-A team, he hit just .175 in 143 at-bats.

Hey, I know! He didn’t make any errors in his first 12 games in AA! That’s it! Schuerholz is a defensive dynamo! That’s why he got promoted.

See, I knew it wasn’t nepotism.
