Uecker, Anyone?

A woman once charged with stalking Milwaukee Brewers announcer Bob Uecker was asked to leave the team’s spring training game versus the Cubs on Monday.

Ann E. Ladd attended the spring showdown despite a restraining order that bars her from attending games that Uecker is announcing and requires her to stay at least 500 feet away from him. From the AP:

The 73-year-old Uecker has said Ladd stalked him for six or seven years, seeking his autograph, sending him unwanted gifts and appearing at ballparks and hotels where he was staying. Ladd, 45, has described herself as a Brewers fan.

Now, I’ve got a couple of problems here. The first being that, according to reports, Uecker was not even announcing the game. In fact, the club would not clarify whether he was even at the ballpark.

Two: What exactly is an unwanted gift? I’ve received a lot of gifts in my day and not ONE of them has ever been unwanted.

Three: This is Bob Uecker we’re talking about, right? The same Bob Uecker who so elegantly portrayed Harry Doyle in the 1989 baseball hit Major League? The former “friend of the feather”? The same Harry Doyle I’ve revered as a pinnacle of baseball fiction for the last eighteen years? What in the world is he doing filing a restraining order? How disappointing.

Four: This woman has publically described herself as a Brewers fan. Isn’t that suffering enough?

Uecker has been the voice of the Brewers since 1971 and won the Hall of Fame’s 2003 Ford C. Frick Award for major contributions to baseball broadcasting, but I’m still rooting for the underdog. Ann, if you still want you some Uecker, you go get you some Uecker.

Update, 6/2/08: According to documents provided by Ann E. Ladd herself, the stalking charges have been dismissed “on Prosecutor’s Motion.” Ladd contacted UmpBump.com via email,  and submitted copies of court documents that confirm the dismissal of all stalking charges in the case.
