The Two Faces of Jonathan Papelbon

Jonathan Papelbon is on the cover of Sports Illustrated this week looking like one scary badass. In other words, like he usually looks when he’s pitching.

Please, stay your hand, mighty SI cover curse!

But this weekend, after the Sox clinched the division, we got to see another side of Papelbon. A side we hadn’t glimpsed before. The side that dances in its underwear in public:

Plus, later, we met the side that runs around inside the clubhouse in its jockstrap. But alas, there’s no video of that floating around YouTube (yet).

    Sarah,

This has made my night so much better. Papelboozer burning up the carpet…priceless.

  2. Sarah Green Says:

Happy to help, Zvee! And as soon as I can find the jockstrap pictures, I am posting them. I have seen the Papelbum!

  3. Texas Gal Says:

Well, if you’re interested, I’ll just go ahead and pimp my own self out and say there’s video of the jockstrap moment here and more video of the irish jig and dancing here

  4. Sarah Green Says:

Thank you Texas gal! Long live the internets! God Bless freedom of speech!

UmpBumpers, Texas Gal has put together by far the most comprehensive video of the crazy Sox boogiedown that I have yet seen. I urge you to check it out.

    Random observations:

    * I love that when the Sox clinched a division berth, all of Beantown’s talking heads talked about how stately and calm the professional the Red Sox all were, and how this was indicative of the character of the team and how they were no longer the “idiots” of 2004. I love that no one has recanted their “insight” into the character of the team after witnessing the display of stately, calm, and professional behavior on display at the Fens this weekend.

    * I feel happy that Jason Varitek and Alex Cora, having left the park before the Yankees-Orioles game finished, turned around and came back to party with the team. (Alex Cora crowd surfed and even took over the PA booth! You go, utilityman!)

    * I feel sad that J.D. Drew and Julio Lugo had both left the park and did not come back to party. Guys, this was your chance to show us how we’d got you all wrong! That you’re not passionless, apathetic mercenaries! You’re just misunderstood! Siiiigh.
