Phils continue to find new ways to lose
Through the magic of MLB.TV I’ve been following today’s Phillies-Mets game. Mets starter John Maine looked shaky and Phils SP Cole Hamels, while not at his best, kept the Mets at bay and pitched out of some tricky situations.
The Phils got down early, thanks to an embarassing Abraham Nunez error that will be up on Youtube in short order (the ball landed on his head). But reigning MVP Ryan Howard put the Fightins back on top with a blast that shook Shea. It was a three run shot, the kind of homer that changes not only games, but seasons. It was huge.
And now, Billy Wagner is nailing down another Mets win, a decision that will leave the Phils 1-6 on the season. The final score: Mets 11, Phils 5.How did it all go so wrong so fast? There are a number of culprits. Bad luck, of course. A Shawn Green broken bat blooper fell into short right field. Jimmy Rollins, usually so sure-handed, dropped a routine grounder with the bases loaded.
But for the most part, this was a simple case of the Phillies bullpen blowing the game in the late innings. Again.
A few minutes ago, I got this email from my friend Paul, who is a Mets fan:
I need to send some flowers to Geoff Geary as a token of my appreciation. Do you know where I can send that? Thanks.
Paul, as you can tell, is a dick. But he’s also right. The Phillies gave away this game today. They wrapped it in a bow and handed it to the Mets.
I know it’s early, and I’m trying not to be a typical negative Philly fan. But I’m not sure how much more of this I can take.
